1 - Now concerning the matters about which you wrote to me: “I (Paul) think it’s good for a man to remain single, rather than marry.” 2 But in the world there is the temptation to immorality. [Porneia - fornication (sexual relations between people who are not married to each other - The Amer. Heritage Dictionary). From pernaō - to sell off, properly, a selling off (surrendering) of sexual purity.] {Rightness, health.} So each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Likewise the wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband does. 5 Don’t deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer, but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you, and you fall due to a lack of self-control.

     6 Now this is only advice, but I will say this, 7 I wish all were as I myself am. But each has their own gift from God, one of one kind and another of another kind..

41 - And as he drew near and saw the city (Jerusalem) he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side (at 70CE and at the culmination of history/the “unveiling” when things crash and fail) 44 and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will leave not-oNe stone upon another in you (here proven the “70 weeks gap”, Dn.12:11-12 w/ 1Cor.3:16, Lk.19:41,44) because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

     45 And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46 saying, “It is written! ‘My house shall be a house of prayer!’ but you have made it a den of thieves!”

     47 He taught daily in the temple, and (the leaders/authorities) chief priests, scribes and principal men of the people, were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they couldn’t find anything to do, for the people were hanging on his every word.

                ~ Galatians 3:1-7 ~

1 - Oh foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched [baskainó - to slander, hence by ext. to fascinate, bewitch, overpower, from baskanos - to cast an evil spell, wishing injury upon someone, to bewitch. In classical Greek, Aristotle used baskaínō for "bewitching through the use of an evil power." That is, putting someone under a spell so they no longer could think (act) according to reason ..is also associated with envy ..slander, befazzled] you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing, with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain? If indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you, and works miracles among you, do so by works of the law? Or by hearing with faith - 6 just as Abraham “believed God - and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

1 - “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.” (Because of this upcoming hard time and trauma. ..If the disciples are to be warned? Having seen and lived all that they did! Oh the potential, of how forgetful we humans can be!) 2 “They will put you out of the synagogues/churches/town halls, etc. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think they are doing a service to god. 3 And they will do these things because they don’t know the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, so that when it occurs you will remember that I told you about it.

     I didn’t tell you these things earlier, because I was with you. 5 But now I’m going to he who sent me, and none of you asks, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I’ve now said these things, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the help(er) (God’s Spirit/Presence) won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convince [elégxō – properly, to convince with solid, compelling evidence, including to expose, prove wrong, and correct; (he will) convince] the world concerning sin (hamartia - missing the mark, wrongdoing) and concerning righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they don’t believe in me, 10 concerning righteousness, because I’m going to the Father, and you will no longer see me. 11 And concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. (The verdicts have all been handed down. Except one. Ro.3:4, if we read the right version. And so then and now the message of reconciliation goes out..) 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you are not able bear them now. 13 Yet when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the Truth, for he will not speak in part, but what he hears he will address, and the things coming he will make known to you. 14 He will glorify me, for the things concerning me, he will make known to you. 15 All the Father has is mine! So I say, he will take what is mine and will tell (explain) it to you. 16 In a little while, you will no longer see me. But after a little while, you will see me again.”

1 - So I (Peter) encourage the elders among you, as a fellow elder, and as a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God that is with you, not as an obligation, but with genuine care, as God does. And not for shameful gain! (Worldly or personal/ego gain.) But readily. 3 Not as domineering or overbearing, but as examples to them. 4 And then when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. (Crown of life! Not metal.) 5 Likewise, you who are younger, hear and listen to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Be humbled therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so in due time HE may raise/advance you. 7 And cast all your cares (questions) and worries upon him, because he (most genuinely) cares for you!

(A lot of everyday people really liked Jesus, but those worldly and in power didn’t, to say the least. Though the people waffled.) 20 Remember the words I spoke to you, that ‘a servant is not greater than their master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they heard my word, they will also hear yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name (my cause) because they don’t know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of being wrong [hamartia - missing the mark].                   ~ Romans 9:1-8 ~

1 - What I (Paul) am saying is the truth in Christ. I am not lying. My conscience bears witness with me, along with the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and continuing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers! My kinsmen according to the flesh.  (After all, it couldn’t be ‘forever’! But a switch in roles.) 4 They are Israelites! And to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises! 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from them is the lineage of Christ, and the God over all, the blessed forever. Amen. 6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For all descended from Israel are not of Israel, 7 for not all are children of Abraham because they are descended, as an example “through Isaac shall your descendants be named.” 8 This means that it is not the natural descendants of Abraham who are considered children of God, but those who receive the promise (hebrew and non hebrew alike) are those counted as the children.

           Luke 1:1-25

Luke, is a Greek doctor who met and did some traveling with Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament letters in the process of establishing groups of believers, called by the town or city they were in. Luke begins his gospel account about Jesus - vs. 1 - Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who were eyewitnesses and proclaimed the message. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught [katécheó - to teach by word of mouth].

     5. In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in the way of the LORD (put forth in “the law” - basically the society preserving ten). 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years. 8 One day Zechariah was serving God in the Temple, for his order was on duty that week. 9 He was “chosen by lot” according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, a crowd stood outside, praying. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and afraid. 13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John. I’m an old man and my wife is well along in years.” 19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel, God's servant, and I was sent to tell you this good news. 20 You have not believed what I have said. So you will be unable to speak until this happens." 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he did come out, he couldn’t speak, and they knew he had seen a vision. He motioned to them with his hands, but couldn’t say a thing. 23 When his days of service were completed, he returned home. 24 Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, conceived and went into seclusion for five months. 25 “The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor, blessing me in the eyes of my neighbors.”

Enter The Story Reading Schedule

I am working on transferring my Bible reading schedule onto this website / blog. The reading schedule can be found here - http://inner-monastery.blogspot.com/p/daily.html

The gospels are blended into two six month continuous readings in an effort to more easily 'enter the story' and feel a bit more as if we are walking with Jesus, where He walked and as He walked.

The Book of Acts is read over the course of the year. As is the Book of Revelation.

The New Testament letters are also read annually, and are read in the order believed to have been written.

There's an annual schedule for Psalms and a 31 day schedule for Proverbs. And a developing one for the books of the prophets.

What I've Been Up To Lately

During 2014 I worked on a reading schedule of reading the four gospels as one continuous account.  I was semi happy with the result. You see, it turned out to be a bit repetitive in places. So I have been working on dividing the reading into two six month schedules.

I've managed to, I hope, have the two schedules done, and am now proofreading my way through the first one. It's going very well!

Previous to this, I followed a schedule of reading one gospel per season of the year. I also like to read the letters of the New Testament in the order they were believed to have been written. Reading them this way brings out a much more complete and clearer picture - a cohesive whole picture - of the days and events of the earliest believers, the first churches as they sprang up and grew, and the challenges they faced.
