GospeL Verses ~ Luke 1:39-45

Soon after her visit from Gabriel, 39 - Mary rose up in haste and went into the hill country, of a town of Judah, 40 to the home of Zechariah and she greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby in her womb leaped. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit(/Presence of God) 42 and she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women! And blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 Why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

                ~ Hebrews 3:12-19 ~

12 - Take care, each one of you - lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart - which will lead you to fall away from the living God. 13 But encourage and urge one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none may be hardened, and fall by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we share in Christ, if indeed we stay on course, holding firm our first confidence to the end. 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” 16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Wasn’t it those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, who died in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear they would not enter his rest, if not to those who did not follow/obey? 19 So we see - they were unable - to enter because of unbelief. (But there is no ‘forever’ in the verse. That has become habitually assumed.)

           Luke 1:1-25

Luke, is a Greek doctor who met and did some traveling with Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament letters in the process of establishing groups of believers, called by the town or city they were in. Luke begins his gospel account about Jesus - vs. 1 - Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who were eyewitnesses and proclaimed the message. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught [katรฉcheรณ - to teach by word of mouth].

     5. In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in the way of the LORD (put forth in “the law” - basically the society preserving ten). 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years. 8 One day Zechariah was serving God in the Temple, for his order was on duty that week. 9 He was “chosen by lot” according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, a crowd stood outside, praying. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and afraid. 13 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John. (๐Ÿค”The individual help/promise, and the collective.) 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the LORD. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God. 17 He will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” 18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I’m an old man and my wife is well along in years.” 19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel, God's servant, and I was sent to tell you this good news. 20 You have not believed what I have said. So you will be unable to speak until this happens." 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he did come out, he couldn’t speak, and they knew he had seen a vision. He motioned to them with his hands, but couldn’t say a thing. 23 When his days of service were completed, he returned home. 24 Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, conceived and went into seclusion for five months. 25 “The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor, blessing me in the eyes of my neighbors.”

           ~ Hebrews 3:1-6 ~

1 - And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to the heavenly calling, consider and think carefully about Jesus, God’s messenger and High Priest. 2 He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses, in all God’s house, was faithful. 3 But Jesus has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. [“And nothing was made that was not made with/through him” Jn.1:3] 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 Now Moses was a faithful worker in God’s house as a testimony to what would be said in the future. [Another version - “..he told God's people what would be said in the future.”] 6 But Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are His house, if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope [elpis - expectation] of which we boast.
