Revelation 17 11-18

(The angel continues.) 11 - “As for the beast that was and is not, it’s an eighth but it belongs to the seven {final fulfillment, seven become one?} and it goes to destruction. 12 And the ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings - for one hour - together with the beast{/entity/institution}. {Ten horns, kings, seats, divisions, toes-Dn2.} 13 These (ten) are - of one mind - and they hand over their power and authority TO the beast. 14 They will make war against the Lamb (Ps.2, Rev.6:3-4) and the Lamb will prevail [nikaó - prevail, subdue, overcome, conquer, from nikē - victory] for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”

     15 And the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.16 And the ten horns and the beast {political} will hate the prostitute {$ity Babble}. They will make her desolate and naked, and devour {consume, waste} her and will burn her with fire {warfare}17 for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and handing over their royal power to the beast until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman you saw is the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.”

The Rev vision is told 3times, joining at trumpet 7. The seals description-as their full effects-veils much. Vs.13:13 was by an office. A weekly study.

                paraphrased study

9 - If anyone has an ear, let them hear. 10 If anyone into (or taking?) captivity, to captivity they go. if anyone with the sword slays (usually translated, is slain [apokteinó or apoktennó: to kill, slay]) with the sword must they be slain. (Or slay?) Here is a call for - the endurance and faith - of the saints/believers.

     11 Then I (John) saw another beast rising out of the earth. (A difference, the huge beast, vs.1, rose up out of the sea {of humanity}. These two are integral to late days prophecy {additionally} evidenced by the angel in chapter ten - who had a ‘little scroll’ in his hands, and was standing with one foot on land and one foot on the sea.) (This littler beast, surely is essentially a modern, larger scope fulfillment of the “little horn” of Daniel’s prophecy which came out of a cluster of horns, and as it grew, it uprooted three of the other horns around it, Dn.7:8 and 8:9, Rev.12:14?) This one has two horns like a lamb but it (ends up?) speaking like a dragon. 12 It (also ends up) exercising all the authority of the first beast - in its presence (the little beast will unlawfully step into the prime horn/seat of the huge many headed geopolitical beast/entity/institution? A bit after the half point of a lauded treaty/league established after a crises which just happens to consolidate powers. But which treaty, alas, will only last seven years, and will be broken, in the middle, against Israel by “taking away or removing” their “perpetual sacrifices” ..of prayers, etc, oR place of, Dn.12:11-12 w/Lk.19:41,44 and 1Cor.3:16.)

     This (smaller, second) beast makes the earth and its inhabitants worship (be in allegiance to?) the first (larger) beast, whose mortal wound was healed. (The last days version/fulfillment, like yesteryear’s, was, was not, then was again.) 13 It (a two horned office) performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven/sky, to earth in the sight of, and presence of mankind. (This fiery event pinpoints/ed an office, not yet an individual.)

When we left off last week, the dragon was raging, now to be more attentively upon “the faith’s other children” - which, surely(?) brings us to Revelation 16’s gathering to Armageddon battle (Mt.13:30). End of chapter 12. End of one of three tellings of the vision. Chapter twelve being the middle telling. “..And the dragon stood on the sand of the sea shore”.. How he turns rage on Israel and takes the world to Armageddon brings us to chapter 13.

     13:1 - And I saw a (many headed geopolitical) beast (entity, institution) rising up, out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on the horns of it, and upon the heads of it, names of blasphemy [blasphémia - slander]. 2 And the beast that I [John] saw was like a leopard, but with feet like a bear's, and its mouth, like a lion's mouth. (All predators.) And the dragon gave to it, his power and his throne and gave it great authority. 3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound was healed. (And it comes about that) the whole world is filled with wonder [thaumazó - marvel, wonder, admiration] and will follow after the beast. 4 And (so) they revered the dragon, who had given the authority to the beast, and they revered the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? And who can make war against it?” (“And they shall say ‘Peace! Peace!’” But *alas! Dan.12:11 and 2:43; Dan.12:11-12 w/ Lk.19:41-44 and 1Cor.3:16.)

        5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and slanderous/blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. (This is the second 42 months/3.5 years of the lauded peace [covenant, treaty, league] that *alas, will only last seven years, and will be broken in the middle against Israel - Rev.12:17.) 6 It opened its mouth to utter slanders against God, blaspheming his name and his tabernacle, and those tabernacling in heaven. [Angels.] 7 Also it was allowed to make war upon the saints [believers/followers] and to conquer them. And authority was given to it over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8 And all who dwell upon earth will revere it, everyone whose name has not been written in the book of life of the lamb who was slain from the founding [katabolé - laying down] of the world [kosmos - order, the world, a properly ordered system, universe, creation]. (Why was that the remedy? The slain lamb, remedy of what God knew was bound to occur.. his having allowed that man and angel be thinking, reasoning beings, which includes having some power of choice. God surely(!?) does not need to be appeased, though think of the guiltiest of guilty consciences.. At the same time, yes Jesus paid - in biblical manner of speaking - our debt to universal society, and the remedy must be strong enough to convince all, from the most ‘innocent’ among us, to the most heartless and cruel. The penalty/result of straying from God who is Life, is death, this entropy and passing away. But “death could not hold him” for he is and was Perfect, the only straight out from God one. Entering death he had the key to unlock death and so set the captives (all of us) free. Important note - The initiaL conditions of some upon GWT judgment ‘day’ is portrayed in the rich man and Lazarus parable, and in the outside of the vision narrative of Rev.22.)

7 - And the lamb (that looked to have been slain, went from ascension to this chapter?) went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before [enópios - before, in sight of] him. Each one was holding a harp, and a golden bowl full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, 10 “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed (from death) people for God from every tribe and language, people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign upon earth.”

     11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders, the voice of many angels, as myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands of voices, 12 saying with a loudly, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain! To receive power and wealth, wisdom and glory, honor and strength, and blessing!” 13 And I heard every creature in heaven and upon earth and below earth and upon the sea, and in the sea, all saying, “To he who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, blessing! And honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

     14 And the four living creatures were saying, “amen” and the elders fell down and worshiped the one who lives to the ages of the ages.

7 - “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David. Who opens and no one will shut. Who shuts and no one opens. (So if they open or shut it’s his choice.) 8 I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power [dýnamis - power, might, strength, ability] and yet you have kept my word and you have not denied my name. 9 Look, I will make those of the assembly of Satan who declare themselves as true but are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before you, and they will learn that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance - I will keep [téreó - watch over, guard] you from the hour of trial/testing that is coming upon the whole world - to try those who dwell upon earth. 11 I come quickly [tachu - quickly, speedily]. Hold fast what you have. So no one may seize your crown. (“Of Life” not metal!) 12 The one who conquers, I will make to be a pillar in the temple of my God. And they shall not go out (of the full, satisfied blessed state) any more. I will write upon them the name of my God, and the name of His city, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from Him out of heaven, and my own new name. (..Like a script..? Written on our heart and mind. Forever. Unless we are extremely dumb:) 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” [To be a pillar! 😮]

12  - And to the angel [aggelos - an angel, a messenger, sometimes delegate] of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of he who has the sharp two-edged sword.’ (Truth. The tip of this sWord can delicately separate true thread from untrue thread upon the fabrics that make up the different tapestries that are in operation in the world.)

     13 “I know where you live. Where Satan has his throne. But you hold fast to my name and you haven’t denied the faith, even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed there where Satan is dwelling. 14 Yet I have a few things against you - you have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block in the path of the sons and daughters of Israel, so they ate food sacrificed to idols (they ended up joining the reverence of other ‘gods’) and they practiced sexual immorality (which was actually a part of the ‘worship’ and then there was human sacrifice of many babies to Molech).

     15 You also have some who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. (Nicolaitans may have begun as a following of a christian in error, named Nicolaus, and their lifestyles and things they did, and taught, were scandalous and corrupt.) 16 Therefore repent [metanoeó - to change one's mind or purpose, from metá - changed after being with, and noiéō - think; think differently after being with]. If not, I will come to you quickly and war [polemeó - to make war] (the poles/extremes!) against them with the sword of my mouth. (The sWord from between his lips.) 17 Whoever has an ear, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches (believers/followers). To the one who conquers/prevails I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give them a white stone, with a new name written on it that no one knows except the one who receives it.”

“Overcomers”! Overcomers of what? ..”The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” ..But what can come “out of the heart ..evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander.. anger, division..” Jesus said, “I am come that you might have joy.” Thank goodness it’s the Spirit that changes us and enables us. Our part? Is to “rest iN him”.

1 - “To the angel of [en - in, on, at, by, with] the church in Ephesus write - ‘The words of he who holds the seven stars in his right hand, and who walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2 I know your hard work, your patient endurance, and how you can’t bear with those who do evil, but have tested those who call theirselves apostles but they’re not. And you found them to be false. 3 You have had perseverance and have endured for my name's sake, and you haven’t grown weary. 4 But I have against you this, that you have abandoned your first love. 5 Call to mind from where you have fallen and turn and the first results do. If not, however, I will come and remove your lampstand out of its place, unless you repent/change course. 6 Yet this you have, you hate [miseo - hate, detest, love less] the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. (Nicolaitans mAy have began as a following of a christian in error, and their works/things they did and believed were scandalous and corrupt.)

     7 Whoever has an ear 🌽 let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (Plural.) To the one who is victorious [nikaó - to conquer, prevail, from níkē - victory, properly, conquer, overcome, to carry off the victory, come off victorious] I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’”

     ..How do we come off victorious? I think there’s one rule, “love God”. Draw near. Pursue Him. Did Jesus give us a ‘formula for success’ on the eve of his crucifixion? A spirituaL formula. The peaceful, joyful wine of God’s Spirit/Presence. And our daily bread, from the mouth of God, the New Testament (way) of our Lord.
