10-14 - Galatians 5 1-8

1 - It’s for freedom and liberty that Christ has set us free! Stand firm therefore! And don’t submit to a yoke of slavery. 2 Look: I, Paul, say to you, that if you accept circumcision (as a requirement to be in a relationship/communion and union with God who is Life) Christ will not profit you. (We cannot both earn and receive a GIFT.) 3 I testify again to every one who accepts circumcision that they are obligated to keep the whole law. {False teachers were insisting the “New Way” had to include the “Old Way” - the Old, and New, “covenants/agreements - first one needed a mediator/lawyer/a speaking for, because two sides were agreeing; new way didn’t need one because it’s basically one sided”. Yet! We DO have to “ENTER his Rest”! Heb.4. And respond, let the heart cry “Father! My father!”}

     4 You are cut off from Christ, if you want to be justified by the law. And fallen from grace. 5 For through the Spirit - by faith - we are eagerly waiting for the hope [elpis - expectation!] of righteousness. {Bestowed. And perfection! “We shall be like Him” 1Jn.3:2 but each one unique. Which God in Malachi 3:17 calls jewels.} 6 For - in Christ Jesus - neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything. {Doesn’t work, was always meant as a guardian and tutor - keeping things together, not dissolute/cursed - until the maturity of Christ in us and we in him. Not outer effort to transformation, but true inner transformation authored and carried out by God aLmighty.} But only by faith, which foundation is love. {The law is Love, always has been. One ruLe! Love God, and we wiLL genuinely love, have affection for and care about our fellow person/all humanity with its BEAUTIFUL branches. ..The sad commentary of history is shared by all branches. Any other view is political blame game for despicable purposes.}

     7 You were running well. Who hasss hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion is not from he who calls you. [The letter to the Galatians is all about the New Covenant/Contract/Treaty/Promise of God, which Paul called the New and Living Way - Heb.10:20, “opened for us by Jesus”.]

(Case in point.) 11 - When brother Peter came to Antioch, I (Paul) had to challenge him! 12 For before certain men came from James (and Jerusalem) he was eating with the Gentiles. But when they came, he drew back, separating himself. He did this because he feared what the circumcision party might think. {The “circumcision party” was Hebrew believers. They were brought up with the society preservative laws as THE covenant with God for LiFe, blessing and well being. The “judgments of The Law - against us - has been nailed to the cross of Jesus”. And now The Law is lived up to by the help and enabling which the Spirit/Presence of God called “grace” gives us. Indeed we surpass the society preservative laws! Not only does a Spirit filled person not murder, but they do not hate (divide, separate). We may hate an idea and beliefs that captivate, but not the people captured.}

     13 And then {of course} the rest of the Hebrews (slang Jews) acted hypocritically along with him! Even Barnabas was led astray!

     14 But when I saw how their conduct wasn’t in step with the Truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile - and not like a Jew - how can you expect the Gentile believers to live like Jews?” {Mixing “law with grace” as “another gospel”/message of God. On either side of the “narrow way” is two huge, bog filled ditches, the two L’s - Legalism and License. Both are deadly to successful Christ-ianity, both individual and collective.} 15 For we ourselves are Jews by birth and are not lawless. 16 Yet we know - that a person is not JUSTIFIED by following the law {because being imperfect/entropic we cannot do it perfectly} - but justification/declared innocent and righteous - is through faith in Jesus Christ.

     And we Hebrews, also, have believed in Christ, as the means to be justified. [Dikaioó - quote - “from dikē - right, approved, especially in a legal, authoritative and judicial sense; to show what is right, i.e. conformed to a proper standard, upright; the believer is made righteous/justified (G1344 /dikaióō) by the Lord, cleared of all charges.. Moreover, they are justified (1344 /dikaióō, "made right, righteous") by God's grace each time they receive (obey) faith (4102 /pístis), i.e. "God's inwrought persuasion" cf. the -oō ending which conveys "to bring to/out”] — {aha! It’s not only “all charges dropped” but right-ness is brought in and out of the (yielded) believer. Genuine Faith will bear Fruit. And all of it is by faith - The “new and living way”.}

     Because by works of the law, no one is justified! {Imperfect cannot make itself perfect.. 🗝️But God can, and will.} 17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be practicing sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin?? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a deliberate offender. {Loving death?} 19 For through the law, I died to the law - so that - I might live to God. 20 What I mean of course, is I, the old me, has been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live. But Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not cancel out and frustrate the grace of God! For if righteousness is earned {and not a gift and endowment} then Christ died in vain!

27 - After this as he was walking about, he saw a tax collector named Levi (Matthew) sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And leaving everything, Levi got up and followed him.

     29 And later Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there were many tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled about him and the disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

     31 Jesus answered, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are not well. 32 I have not come to call the righteous (those who thinK they are righteous) but sinners to repentance.” 33 And they said, “The disciples of John often fast, and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours sit around eating and drinking!” 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?! 35 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” 36 He also told them a parable - “No one uses new cloth to make a patch for an old garment. If he does, the patch will tear, and the garment will be torn worse than before. 37 And no one puts new wine into an old wineskin. If they do, the new wine will burst the old skin, the wine will be spilled, and the skin will be destroyed as well. 38 But new wine must be put into a fresh wineskin. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good (enough).’”

18 - And so, where there is forgiveness and no longer remembrance of sins [hamartion - sin, failure, missing the mark] and lawless acts there is no longer any offering for sin to be made. 19 Therefore since we have confidence to enter the holy place [of God’s Presence/Spirit] by the blood of Jesus, 20 by this new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his suffering (the promise of forgiveness, written and sealed in blood) 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. And with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil [ponéros - toilsome, bad] conscience and our bodies washed with pure [katharós - unmixed, without undesirable elements, root of catharsis, free from contamination] water (of Life?)
