 • 1 Timothy 5:1-7  Matthew 24:7-14

            ☀️ 1 Timothy 5:1-7

1 - Don’t correct as though scolding, an older man, but encourage him as you would a father. And younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with all purity.

     3 Honor widows who are truly widows. 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them show godliness to their own household and make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. 5 She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her expectation [elpis - expectation, trust, hope] upon God and continues in praise and prayers night and day. 6 But someone who is living wantonly is fading away even while living.

     7 Command these things as well, so they may be without reproach. {The believers Paul had left Timothy with to complete the building of them into a group faithfully, thus fruitfully in Christ}.

            🌙 Matthew 24:7-14

(Jesus continues, answering “what will be the sign of your coming and the consummation/completion/end of the age?”) [Verse 6 - “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be alarmed, for this has to happen. But the end is not yet.] 7 - For nation will rise against nation, kingdom against kingdom.

     There will be famines and earthquakes in different places. 8 But all this is the beginning of birth pains.

     9 Then, they’ll deliver you up to tribulation [thlipsis - trouble, distress, affliction, persecution, from thlibō - to press, squeeze] and even put you to death. For you will be hated by all nations because of my name. 10 And then many will fall away [skandalizó] and turn against one another, and hate one another. 11 And many pseudo {misled} prophets will rise and mislead many. {Of all stripes?} 12 And as lawlessness increases, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved [sózó - saved, rescued, delivered, healed, preserved, from a primary word σώος (sóos) - safe, sound]. 14 And this GOOD news {huge understatement} of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations. And then the end/completion will come. [Telos - end, purpose, goal, completion, fulfillment.]

            ☀️ Romans 15:8-13

8 - For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised {to the Hebrew nation ..first. - He had called and separated Israel into a new nation, in order to make himself known as separate from ‘the gods’ of the nations which were prevalent}.

      This {hearing the Good News proclaimed first} shows God's faithfulness [alétheia - truth, integrity, faithfulness] and is what was promised to the patriarchs. 9 All this so the nations might glorify God for his mercy [eleos - mercy, kindness, good will toward the afflicted, joined with a desire to relieve]. [“His mercy endures forever” Ps.136.]

     As it’s written, “Therefore I will praise [aineó - boast, shine, praise] you among the nations! I will sing to your name” [ónoma - name, authority, cause].

     10 And again it’s written, “Rejoice [euphrainó - rejoice, be glad, make merry] oh nations among his people, Israel” [Deuteronomy 32:43]. 11 And again, “Praise the Lord, all nations! And let all the peoples praise [epaineó - praise, applaud] him” [Ps.117:1] {Romans 3:4 - “..let God be true, and every man a liar, as it’s written: "That You  {God} may be justified in Your words, and will prevail in Your being judged."}

     12 And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the nations, in him will the nations trust” [Isaiah 11:10].

     13 May the God of hope [elpis - (hope) expectation, trust] fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit{/Presence of God} you may abound in hope [elpis - (hope?) expectation and trust!]

            🌙 Matthew 16:21-28

21 - From then on Jesus began to let his disciples know he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the leaders - the elders, chief priests and scribes {much more political than spiritual or religious/devoted}. And that he would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised.

     22 Peter took him aside and began to disagree with him, saying, “Far be it Lord! This cannot happen to you!” 23 But Jesus said, “Get behind me satan/opposer, you’re acting as a hindrance and temptation to me. For you’re not seeing as God sees, but as man sees.”

     24 Then Jesus said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let them deny theirself and take up their cross, and come and follow me. 25 For whoever will save their life {as is before Christ} will lose it {the life we think we have} but whoever loses {lets go of} their life for my sake will find it. {God has our highest blueprint!} 26 For what will it profit someone to gain the whole {wide} world and forfeit their soul? [Psuché, psychēs - life, self, inner being, heart, mind, soul, distinct identity, unique personhood.] Or what shall a person give in return for their soul/personhood? 27 For the Son of Man will be coming, with his angels, in the glory {and radiance} of his Father, and he will repay each one according to what they have done.

     28 Truly, I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” {Prophecy is often in two scopes, a first more specific, smaller scope, and later global in scope. In this case after 70 CE, Jerusalem’s Armageddon, came what’s called the church age.. Age of the wheat. And at (the modern, total) Armageddon is his full, and in person, coming, after which is “the” millennium, first half of the Lord’s long second advent. See Rev.20, but the chapter is portrayed like describing the crests of waves and not a lot of the in between.}

☀️ 1 - Now I (Paul) would remind you of the good news I passed on to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you’re saved, if you hold fast to it. God forbid your belief be vain and not genuine! 3 For I proclaimed and delivered to you, as of first importance, what I, also, received: that Christ died for our sins [hamartia - missing the mark] as told in the Scriptures.  {And Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you” (be crucified) “so you may be where I am”. ..And it is strong enough to appease every conscience.}

     4 That he was buried, and then raised on the third day, as the Scriptures say. 5 That he appeared to Peter, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred at one time, most of who are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James (Jesus’ natural/birth brother, Gal.1:19) then again to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

14 - Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver over Jesus to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment on he looked for an opportunity to betray him.

     17 Now on the first day of (the seven days called) Unleavened Bread - (Spring holy week was referred to as both Passover, and Unleavened Bread. The meal/feast is upon 1st Day of Unleavened Bread - which the days begin at sunset, not midnight - and the meal includes the lamb that was sacrificed earlier - in preparation - during the previous day called Passover.)

     On the first day of Spring holy week (at evening as Passover was beginning) the disciples asked Jesus, “Where do you wish us to make ready for you to eat the Passover?”18 And he said, “Go (across the valley and) into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The teacher says, my time is at hand, with you I will keep the Passover with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they made preparations for Passover.

13 - So gird up your minds, be sober minded and ready for action. Set and keep your hope. [Elpízō - from elpís - expectation, hope (the noun) – to hope, actively waiting for (expecting) God's fulfillment concerning the faith He has inbirthed through the power of His love.] Set it fully upon the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation/revealing of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be enticed into the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, be holy (innocent) in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call upon him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's actions, conduct yourselves with a healthy fear throughout the time of your sojourn [paroikia -  a sojourning and dwelling in a strange land] 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 Foreknown before the foundation of the world but made known now in late (as of late?) time [chronos - time] for your sakes. 21 For through him you are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory. So that your faith and hope are in God.

     22 And having purified your souls, by your obedience to the truth, love one another with a sincere brotherly love, with true affection from a pure heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God: 24 for “All flesh is like grass�    and all its glory like the flower of grass.�The grass withers,�    and the flower fades,

25 but the word of the Lord 

     remains forever.” (Is.40:6-8)

And this word [rhéma - a word, by impl. a matter, from rhéō - to speak – and rhḗma - a spoken word, interesting commentary: made "by the living voice" (J. Thayer) spoken-word, is commonly used in the NT (and in the LXX) for the Lord speaking His dynamic, living word in a believer to inbirth faith, His inwrought persuasion. Ro 10:17: "So faith proceeds from (spiritual) hearing” and this hearing is consummated through a rhēma-word from Christ" (Gk text). See also Gal 3:2,5 which refers to "the hearing of faith" inbirthed, i.e. a spiritual hearing] (of) the good news that was preached to you.

There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains. 9 Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved” [sṓzō - delivered out of danger and into safety - when the Lord returns, all believers enter “the” millennium, after which the door to it is shut, Mt.25:1-10.)

1 - Don’t use harsh words (Timothy, leader of the group, ‘churches’ were home groups) when you correct an older man, but talk to him as if he were your father. Talk to younger men as if they were your brothers, 2 treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters. 3 Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her. 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. 5 The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. 6 But [literal word for word] the living only for self indulgence is dead even while living.
