BooK of Acts of the First Believers
(Paul is on trial in Caesarea, responding to the accusations of the Jerusalem leaders.) 15 - Paul continued, saying “Having a hope [elpis - expectation] in God, which these men themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the just and also of the unjust, 16 I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.
17 It was after several years, that I came to bring offerings 18 and while I was doing so, they found me in the temple, purified and without any crowd, argument or tumult. But some Jews from Asia came 19 — and they should be here, before you — should they have anything against me. 20 Or else let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the council, 21 other than this one thing, I cried out while standing among them, which was, ‘It’s concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you this day.’”
22 But Felix, having a rather accurate knowledge of the Way, put the council off, saying, “When Lysias the tribune comes down, I’ll decide your case.” 23 Then he gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but have some liberty, and that none of his friends should be prevented from seeing to whatever he might need.
24 Then after some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Jesus. 25 And as he was reasoning with them about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix became alarmed and said, “Go away for now. When I get an opportunity I’ll summon you again.” 26 At the same time he hoped Paul would give him money for his release, so he sent for him often. 27 When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And wanting to do the Jewish/Hebrew leaders a favor, he left Paul in prison.
