GospeL Verses ~ Matthew 20:17-28

17 - As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and said, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the leaders and scribes, and they will condemn him to death. 19 They will deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” 20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons [disciples John and James] and knelt before him to make a request. 21 And he said to her, “What is it you wish?” She said, “Say that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I will drink?” They said, “We are able.” 23 He said, “You will drink of my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to give, but is for those for whom it is prepared by my Father.”

24 When the other ten heard it, they were offended at the brothers. 25 But Jesus called them all to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the nations (gentiles) lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 But it will not be so among you. Whoever would lead must be as a servant, 27 and whoever would be first, must be as a slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served - but to serve. And to give his life as a ransom for many [polýs – many, high in number, multitudinous, plenteous, much, great in amount and extent].”

                  ~ Ephesians 5:17-27 ~

17 - So don’t be foolish! Instead understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 Don’t get drunk with wine, for that lacks sobriety. Instead be FILLED with the Spirit, 19 talking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, your hearts making melody to the Lord, 20 and giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for him. 22 Wives, to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head [kephalé - head, cornerstone, foundation] of the wife even as Christ is the head (cornerstone, foundation) of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior [sótér - from sozo - safety; savior, preserver, deliverer]. (By serving and sacrifice.) 24 Now as the church is under arrangement to Christ, so also wives should be under arrangement in all to their husbands. 25 And husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. 26 This is so he might sanctify [hagiazó - to make holy, consecrate, sanctify, regard as sacred] her, having purified [katharízō – make pure, removing all admixture, intermingling, from katharós - free from contamination, root of catharsis] by the washing that is by the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself, radiant, without spot, wrinkle or shadow, that it might be holy and blameless.
