WeekLy BooK oF Acts 2 22-41

  a paraphrased study

Peter is speaking to a crowd in Jerusalem on Pentecost, seven weeks after Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension. 22 -  “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man having been sent by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus was delivered up according to the determined plan and foreknowledge of God, and was crucified and killed by lawless men. 24 But God raised him up, loosing the hold of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David said concerning him (David, quoting by inspiration, Christ to God), ‘I saw the LORD always with me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, my tongue was filled with joy! Even my body will dwell in hope [elpis - expectation]. 27 For you will not abandon my soul [psyxḗ - from psyxō - to breathe, blow, which is the root of the English words psyche, psychology – soul, psyche, a person's distinct identity, unique personhood, i.e. individual personality] to Hades [hádēs - from A - not, and idein/eidō - see; not seen] (gone - the word originally, without the myth following after) nor let your holy one see corruption/decomposition. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life. And you will make me full of gladness with your Presence.’ (Spirit)

29 Brothers, I say to you with all confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb, to this very day, is with us. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned [egkataleipó - left behind, deserted] to Hades (state of gone) nor did his flesh see decay. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and that is what we (the disciples and about 200) are all witnesses of. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit(/Presence of God), he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens. But he says, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool.’ (1Cor.15:24-28) 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ. This Jesus whom you crucified!”

37 Now when they heard this they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit(/Presence of God). 39 For the promise is to you and your children and to all who are far off, whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he testified and proclaimed, saying, “Save yourselves from this perverse genus (humanity as we know it).” 41 Those who listened were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
