GospeL Verses ~ John 13:1-20 ~
1 - As the Feast [heorté - feast, festival] of the Passover was approaching, when Jesus knew the hour to depart out of the world, to the Father had come, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing the Father had put all things in his hands, and that he had come from God, and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper, laid aside his outer garment, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and washed the disciples' feet and wiped them with the towel. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said, “Lord! do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered, “What I’m doing you don’t understand now, but afterward you will.” 8 Peter said, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 Simon Peter then said, “Lord, not my feet only! But also my hands and head too.”10 Jesus said, “The one who has bathed doesn’t need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean.” (Dusty, tired, hot feet from daily travels. It was good manners to offer a visitor a basin of water to refresh their feet.) “And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him.
12 When he had washed their feet and put his outer garment back on and sat back down, he said, “Do you understand why I did that? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and so I am.14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have so treated you, so should you treat one another. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I do. 16 Truly, I tell you, a worker isn’t greater than his master/mister/boss, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.18 I’m not speaking of all of you, I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against (has betrayed) me’ (Ps.41:9). 19 I am telling you this now, before it happens, so when it does happen you may believe that I am he (the promised and prophesied one). 20 Truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send, receives me, and whoever receives me receives he who sent me.”

~ 1 Peter 2:9-16 ~
9 - But you are chosen persons [genos - family, offspring] a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession! So that you may proclaim the excellence of he who called you out of darkness, into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not so, but now you are his. Previously you had not received mercy, but now you have. 11 So beloved, I urge you as sojourners and strangers in a strange land, to abstain from the passions of the lower nature, which wage war against your soul [psyche]. 12 Keep your behavior among the nations (unbelievers) honorable, so if they speak against you, they may see your good ways and glorify God on the day of visitation [episkopé - a visiting, an overseeing, oversight that naturally goes on to provide the care and attention needed]. 13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to human institutions, whether it be to the emperor as governing, 14 or to governors [hégemón - leader, guide, commander] as sent by him to punish the doing of evil and to praise the doing of good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of accusation and slander. 16 Live as children who are free, but don’t use freedom as a cover-up for evil, but live as genuine servants of God.
