     Jn.18:3-14 & Mt.26:47-57

Eye witness accounts written later:

John 18:3-14 - 3 Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”

5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.

Note - All witness accounts differ.

Matthew 26:47-57 - 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 The betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. 50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of those with Jesus reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. [The account of Luke, the physician (22:51) says Jesus healed the ear.] 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” 55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. 57 And those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.

          Peter’s Second Letter

           ~ 2 Peter 2:8-17 ~

8 That good man (Lot) lived among them, and day after day his soul was grieved as he saw and heard their lawless deeds and evil actions. 9 The Lord knows to deliver the devout out of temptation [peirasmos - an experiment, a trial, temptation, calamity, affliction] and the unjust, to keep for correction [kolazรณ - curtail, prune, check, curb, correct, can include chastisement, even punishment, but why would it be aLways “punishment”?! What good parent does only that for correction] for day of judgment. 10 Especially those who indulge unjust desires and despise authority/order. Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to scoff at and insult the glory without so much as trembling! 11 Whereas angels who are greater in strength and power, than these teachers, don't bring an insulting judgment against them from the Lord. 12 These (still tares/wild weeds, who are being abominable teachers) like unreasoning beasts of instinct, of capture and corruption, in what they do not know slandering, in the corruption/deterioration of them, ruin. 13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. They love to indulge in evil in broad daylight. Blots and blemishes reveling in their own deceptions, feasting/entertaining you. (Always feeding with propaganda?) 14 They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey, a beast without speech/reason, who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness. 17 These are springs without water and mists driven by a wind. For them the gloom of darkness is kept. (One day..no more gloom of darkness - “all things new”.)
